Originally, I had planned an article on the Greek words translated as “hell” in the Gospels as a follow-up to my last one on “eternal.” However, I found that article impossible to write without first doing a series of articles on Jesus’s humor. It may seem odd that explaining “hell” would depend so heavily on understanding Jesus’s funny side, but that fact alone tells us a lot about what is lost in today’s translation.
