List of Similar Sayings
We know that we don’t have a record of everything that Jesus taught during his lifetime, but we know that he said similar things on different occasions. We look at these verses for several reasons, but one of them is to more closely examine the ideas that he taught most consistently. We specifically look at verses that the Gospel narrative seems to describe as a different context and at verses that appear in all three synoptic Gospels.
The Confusing Sayings: Luke 22:27 (Mark 9:35, & Matthew 20:26-27): For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.
The Similar Sayings: Matthew 13:11 , Mark 4:11, & Luke 8:10 “Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them."
The Similar Sayings: Matthew 12:5, Mark 2:25, and Luke 6:3: And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.
Matthew 5:15, Mark 4:21, & Luke 8:16: Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.
Matthew 25:29, Mark 4:25 & Luke 19:26: For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.
The Hard Sayings: Luke 18:22 & Mark 10:21: You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.
The Similar Sayings: Matthew 5:11 & Luke 6:22: Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.
The Similar Sayings: Matthew 8:22 & Luke 20:18: Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.
